The HDMI connection standard offers very rewarding high definition audio and video playback—when it works. When it doesn't work, HDMI is very frustrating. Screen sparkle (pixilation), intermittent audio and video, or HDCP sync issues may result from long cable length or cable kinks, low bus voltage, or corrupted digital signals (which result in complete signal loss). HDMI was developed using Transmission Minimized Differential Signaling, TMDS for short. TMDS requires a cable characteristic impedance of 50 ohms (100 ohms differential) for correct signal decoding, and each piece of equipment within the HDMI chain must match this impedance. A simple HDMI switch, for instance, places multiple ports in parallel dropping the impedance. Long HDMI cables increase cable impedance due to the high frequency capacitance from skin effect. Impedance mismatch manifests itself, within the digital domain, as signal reflections causing bit errors (where a 1 is read as a 0).
